Taylors Vintage Port Quinta de Vargellas 2013 75cl

The "Latour of the Douro" is Taylor's single Quinta Vintage port. Although 2013 was not officially recognised as a vintage, this magnificent release was made from a small amount of Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas that was harvested at the height of ripeness.

The best and most enduring vintage ports are unquestionably those made by Taylor's. The best wines from each of their three estates, which includes Quinta de Vargellas, are set aside to age after each harvest. A tasting panel determines whether the wines are deserving of the label "vintage" after two years. Due to a challenging harvest, 2013 was not officially declared. However, Quinta de Vargellas was among Taylor's first estates to begin harvesting and it brought in enough grapes before the rains to produce a gloriously rich, age-worthy single-quinta port. The grapes are manually pressed in granite lagares, then cool fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Even though it's delicious right now, this vintage port will get better with age.

"The winter preceding the 2012 harvest was much drier and colder than is customary. Budburst occurred towards the third week in March under very dry conditions, with good levels of rainfall occurring in April and early May. Flowering occurred between the 14th – 30th May. Good weather continued during June and July leading to the healthy development of the vines. In midAugust, the grapes were still very low in sugar and with high levels of acidity. The vegetation however, was remarkably healthy for the time of year. The fully performing canopies and fewer grapes resulted in a significant and continuous ripening of the crop during the duration of the harvest. As a result, picking started on the 20th September at Vargellas, with a small pause on the 24th for a few hours of rain, but good weather prevailed for the rest of the harvest."
Fine and delicate on the nose with fruit aromas blending with wild herbs and hints of vanilla. Berry fruit flavours flow through the entire palate with wiry tannins and a wonderfully harmonious finish.
Best served with blue-veined and other richly flavoured cheeses alongside dried fruits such as apricots and figs.
